2016 Dance Scholarship Program

Noche Flamenca has long sought to offer an intensive dance scholarship program for students in New York City who have no such opportunity at their schools and lack the means to pay privately. This project, with funding in part provided by the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, is a small step toward addressing this need.

In addition, we know that Middle School is a challenging time. Dance helps sustain focus and attention, it helps to deal with emotions, stir the imagination, shape the way young people present themselves to the world around them and to understand that there is more than one way to excel.

The workshop will consist of ballet, flamenco, hip-hop, house and waacking technique and choreography dance classes, and a discussion of the history and cultural relevance of each dance form.

Students must have a strong desire to learn dance and must schedule an interview with Martín Santangelo, Artistic Director of Noche Flamenca, in order to be admitted to the workshop.

-Lunch and snacks are provided to all students during the workshop.

-Metrocards will be provided on an as-needed basis for the duration of the workshop.

-Proper foot attire will be provided for flamenco and ballet.

-Workshop is free-of-charge and limited to 10-12 students, ranging between 14-17 years old.

NUBIAN NENE, born and raised in Montreal, she is mostly known for her waacking and house dance styles. She has become a well-traveled dancer, teacher and choreographer and is always looking for opportunity to create, present and teach. In the fall of 2015, she co-choreographed a piece with her partner, Dominique-Sophie, exploring the house dance culture, as lived in New York City, and performed it at 'Place Des Arts' in Montreal for the 100lux dance festival. In 2016, Nubian started touring once again with the Bboyizm Dance Company in Fredericton, New Brunswick and in the Greater Toronto Area for 6 weeks. Recently, Nubian Nene presented her first 15-minute dance/poetry solo ‘STANCE’ as part of the Under Exposed banner at Dixon place, which offered her audience a glimpse at being a woman and black. She will be extending this piece to at least 30 minutes while on an artist-residency in Panama (August 2016). Nubian is always looking for opportunities to broaden her knowledge of culture and dance, hence her driving force to inspire and teach and to become inspired and taught, in return.
